Mercedes A35 AMG 2020 Review
An AMG doesn’t have to be expensive and this is the most affordable AMG that Mercedes makes right now.
Does that mean it doesn’t deserve the AMG accolade then? Hardly as the engineering that turns an A-Class into an AMG is even better here than it was between the previous A45 generation.
The A35 gets an aluminium shear panel beneath the engine compartment that reinforces the front end of the body, with extra braces for the same effect . And there is much gained with torsional rigidity which improves steering precision and allows the suspension to feel comfortable yet dynamic when needed.
The 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine uses a twin-scroll turbocharger for immediate throttle response.
Power is 302 hp and torque is rated at 295 lb ft from 3000rpm. The gearbox is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and the four-wheel-drive system powers the front axle only in normal driving before sending up to 50% of the available torque to the rear.
This car is easy to drive and comfortable on longer runs and the cockpit is hugely impressive for a compact car. (For £1395 you can have AMG Executive pack, which adds leather, parking assist and the larger 10.25in central screen.)
And what about that tech? Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on a beautiful display with AMG track pace to see how quickly you can hit 0-60mph (legally of course) and “Hey! Mercedes” natural speech recognition to control the cars settings are fantastic.
We also have all the assistance features you could want with adaptive cruise, lane assist, 360 parking camera, blind spot detection and more.
